Round Gemstones

Cabachon and Faceted Round Shaped Gems

Round gems are probably the most used gem shape in jewelry designs. You will find thousands of rings, pendant, earrings and even bracelets with round gems. Unlike heart shaped gems which are mainly preferred for jewelry worn by ladies, round shaped gems are suitable for ladies and men. In the case of certain stones like diamonds, the round shape is very predominant followed by square or princess cut diamonds. There is no particular meaning attached to gems with round shapes but, they always give a quiet and yet stylish touch to jewelry.

There is an interesting thing about cutting round shaped gems, it is a bit technical but we will try to explain it in simple terms. Given the shape and porportions of a round shaped gem, it is the gem shape that causes one of the lesser cutting weight losses. Let us presume that you need a 2 carat round topaz gemstone with a faceted cut. You will need to start out with a rough topaz gem that weighs around 15 to 20 carats. However if you wanted a 2 carat square topaz gem the rough stone required would need to be above 20 carats. This explains why round gems followed oval gems are the shapes in which most expensive gems like ruby, sapphire and tanzanite are cut. From the view point of the ultimate buyer, the enter 20 carat starting rough weight will be added finally added to the price tag. So a lower cutting weight loss will give the buyer better value for price paid.

Round gems can be faceted or cabachon (smooth) cut. When it comes to opaque stones like blue lapis or black onyx, the most common cut is the cabachon cut. In this case the round gems can be flat at the bottom. Facets at the bottom are generally given to transparent or at least transluscent stones, the facets allow light reflection and add to the beauty of the gemstone. There are no hard and fast rules here and if you source your gems from a custom cut gem provided like Directstones, you can get any type of cut for any type of gemstone. Coming back to round opaque gems, we mentioned that the base can be flat. An important thing to remember is that a flat base also reduces the 'body' of the gemstone. Cutting a round gem too thin means that, you risk getting the gem damaged with regular wear and tear. Gem manufacturers often cut opaque stones thin, this helps their profit margins! Opaque gems are often sold in retail at price per piece (not carat), a thinner stone weighs less and the gem manufacturer can cut more gem pieces out of the same quantity of rough. This gets to be more critical when you buy a complete jewel with such stones, you do not see the thickness of the gem until it is too late.

There is an interesting variation that you can try for round shaped gems. Transparent gems are commonly cut into faceted rounds. Custom cutting options will allow you to get these gems cut in a round shape that has, a cabachon (smooth) cut on top (face) of the gem while keeping the lower portion faceted. Such special cuts might not be suitable for expensive gems as they do involve both weight loss and risks if, the cutter is not experienced enough. However should you order your round gems from us, we will gladly accomodate such requests.

Let us now talk a bit about setting round shape gemstones. The thickness of the round gemstone needs to be considered when designing or choosing the jewel. If you choose a conventional round faceted gemstone, make sure that the depth of the silver or gold casting does not allow the bottom tip to protrude out of the casting. This tip is generally quite pointed and can hurt the skin. There ofcourse is the possibility of the round gem getting damaged when you clean your jewel too. It is not uncommon for jewelry buyers to specifically request for jewels where, the gemstone touches the skin on the finger. If this is required, get a custom cut round gem that has a slightly blunt bottom tip. Such requirements are more easily handled with opaque round shaped gems, the base can be provided with a slight curve rather than a completely flat base.

Who Is Kaisilver?

Having established itself as the world's leading online custom jewelry provider, Kaisilver now extends it's merchandise line to include gems. While there is no shortage of gem stones in the global market, reliable sources for the retail buyer requirements are not many. Most retail gem dealers work with limited inventories, this reduces buyer options. Another problem with these small dealers is the lack of information and reliability when it comes to gem authenticity and value for money. Kaisilver with it's wide network of gemstone mining and manufacturing resources, is the best source for gems of all types, shapes, sizes and cuts. With a support team that is compromised of jewelry and gemstone experts, the advice and suggestions made by the team relate to your requirements and not to fixed sales targets. The website shows a small sampling of the gems that we offer. You can infact request for just about any gem on the globe. All gems are sourced directly from the source, closely inspected and then custom cut by our expert cutters. With a buyer base that includes fashion models, government officials, casino and resort owners, lawyers, financial experts, students and professors, doctors and surgeons, sportsmen and newsreaders we have become the preferred choice for quality gems and jewelry. By cutting out middlemen commissions and multiple agents, we provide great value for your money. Our large online operation does not stop us from welcoming even the smallest order. Gold and silver jewelry is custom made with equal attention to quality, material and craftsmanship. You can choose from our designs or send us detailed for the style and design that you need.

How To Order?

The process to order gems and custom jewelry at Kaisilver is similar. We do not expect you to make a rush purchase. We do wish that you take the time to discuss your requirements with our experts. They will be in a position to provide constructive suggestions that will guide you to make well informed buying decisions. Email all your requirements to provide as much inputs as possible to help us make relevant suggestions. For example if you are keen on getting a green gemstone but, are not particular about it being an emerald mention this in your email. Our gem experts might suggest a green tourmaline or even a peridot instead of an emerald. This suggestion would reduce our profit margins but will give you a gem that, is much cheaper and even more durable as compared to an emerald. When it comes to payments we offer some very suitable options. Paypal is the preferred form of payment, it is fair to the buyer and seller. The buyer when using paypal never needs to reveal credit card of bank information to the seller. We also accept direct bank transfers but prefer to do this on a case by case basis. When it comes to online transactions these days, both buyer and seller are afraid of frauds. It is quite possible that you do not feel comfortable working with us at Kaisilver. We sometimes feel a little uncomfortable with certain transactions too and prefer to keep away from them. There have always been fears of processing payments through Western Union money transfers. With the latest fraud reports, fake sellers and even fake buyers have been pulling off many online frauds using this mode of payment. At the same time we do understand that armed forces from the U.S who are stationed in various global positions sometimes have no other mode of payment besides Western Union. We therefore accept this mode of payment but at the same time, request you to avoid this mode if you do not feel comfortable using it. Shipping is done through FEDEX and you can expect a production lead time of around 4 to 5 weeks from the date of order confirmation and receipt of payment. Every jewel is fully custom made and requires the complete attention and concentration of highly skilled craftsmen. When it comes to gems, we could provide faster lead times and this can be discussed for each specific order.
