Gems By Shape
You Can Order All Gems In All Shapes And Sizes At
Directstones
Gems in their rough natural form do not
have a uniform and symmetrical shape. Jewelry applications
require specific gem stone shapes to set in metal mountings.
The process of shaping gemstones has a few stages. An expert gem
stone cutter will know which rough gemstone piece would yield the
best shape and dimensions. Selecting the right rough gem stone is an
important decision to be made. Choosing a rough piece that is not
suitable can ruin the gem, it can also involve a high percentage of
cutting loss during the cutting process. Gems from Directstones can
be ordered in all shapes and sizes. Unlike wholesale gem providers
who require you to commit large order volumes, we at Directstones
welcome even the smallest order for a single piece gemstone.
Many gemstone shapes are chosen because
of personal preference but, some gem shapes have meaning built into
their very shape. For example, a heart shaped gem
stone symbolizes love and romance. Heart shaped gems are generally
not cut in gems like rubies, sapphires, emeralds and even tanzanite.
This is because the specific shape results in a substantial cutting
weight loss. The most popular gemstone shapes have always been
oval and round. These are considered to be standard
shapes and most gem cutters are well trained to cut these shapes.
You will find cheap, medium and high priced gemstones cut in the
oval or round shape. It is also important to know that these shapes
give best yield from rough to finish. This means that the weight
loss during cutting is not beyond average limits.
Another interesting shape is the
marquise shaped gemstone. Jewels made with marquise
shaped gems help accentuate elements of the body. For example a
marquise gemstone pendant hugging the neck, gives the neck a longer
appearance. Rings made with marquise shaped gemstones make the
finger appear more sleek and long. While cutting marquise shaped
gems requires good cutting skills, setting such gems is also an
intricate process. Tanzanite or fire opal marquise gems are a good
example. Putting a bit more pressure on the 'V' prongs at either end
of the gemstone, can cause the gemstone to break. While it has not
been verified, many people believe that marquise shaped gems help
bring good luck. It is believed that the upper tip of the gem when
worn, points to the sky and the lower tip points to the earth.
Pear or drop shaped
gemstones were very popular in the 1980's but the demand seems to
have slipped in recent years. Asian jewelers still design some
gorgeous jewelry using pear shaped gemstones. When it comes to
special occassion jewels like engagement and wedding rings, it is
often believed that pear shaped gems are not suitable. In this case,
the pear or drop shape of the gem stone is likened to a tear drop.
Something that signifies sorrow or unhapiness. While the origin of
this belief regarding pear shaped gems cannot be readily traced,
countries like India are not the source of this belief. In India,
the drop shaped is actually viewed with the tip facing up. In this
direction the pear shaped gem looks more like a flame of a candle or
oil lamp.
One very impressive cut for gems is the
emerald cut. This does not mean that all emerald
cut gems are emeralds. Given the expensive price of emeralds and
also the fact that the gem normally has a lot of natural inclusions
and fissures, a special cut was developed to cut emerald
gemstones. This cut reduced the weight loss during cutting and also
reduced the chances of the rough emerald breaking abruptly during
the cutting process. This cut came to be known as the emerald cut, a
large percentage of cut emeralds will be of this shape. The cut is
often applied to other gems and has therefore become a cut name
rather than, a reference to a specific gem stone.
Rectangular gemstone
shapes have a few variations, the emerald cut is also a rectangular
shape but has been discussed separately above.
Square gems are rectangular but have an equal
length and width. Rubies, sapphires, emeralds and tanzanite are not
easy to find in square shapes that go beyond the 6mm to 7mm size.
Octogonal cut gems are interesting, these gems are
square or rectangular but have a slight cut on the corners. Many
gems are cut with the octogonal shape and used in mens and ladies
jewelry. Cutting the corners also helps increase the durability of
the gem as, pointed gemstone corners can break when struck by
physical impact. Baguette shaped gems are also
rectangular but the corners in this case are left pointed. It is
generally the cheaper to medium priced gems that are cut in this
shape.
The above gemstone shapes account for a
large portion of gem shapes used in jewelry. Other shapes are also
available and many of these are classified as fancy
shapes. For example if you like the overall triangular
shape of a heart gem but do not want a complete heart, you could
consider getting a trillion shaped gem stone
instead. There is one gem stone shape called the
cushion shape. The cushion shape can be square or
rectangular but the edges bulge a little outwards. While many people
classify the princess cut as a shape, it is really a type of cut
used to cut the square shape of a gemstone. Diamonds squares are
generally cut with the princess cut.
It is generally seen that most gem
manufacturers are interested in large orders. This is especially
true when it comes to fairly inexpensive gems like citrine, red
garnet, amethyst, smoky quartz etc. Gem buyers who need a single
piece that is specifically cut according to their requirements, find
it hard to get what they need. The Directstones.com
resource strives to meet the requirements of such small buyers. You
could be an ambitious designer all charged up to create that unique
and wonderful jewel, the gemstone you need might be inexpensive but
also hard to find in small quantities. We would urge you to discuss
your requirements with us. You can always email us at sales@kaisilver.com with your
requirements. We will procure even a single stone for you and custom
cut it according to your specifications. While the gems on this
website show some of the gems that we offer, there is no limit on
which stone, size and shape you can order from us. When it comes to
hard to find gem shapes like heart shaped tanzanite or even round
cut emeralds in large sizes, no other gem provider can match the
merchandise that we can provide.
Who Is
Kaisilver?
With a spectacular online track record
that extends over 8 years, Kaisilver is today widely accepted as the
global leader in online custom jewelry. A team of over 3,500 skilled
craftsmen and gemstone cutters works on all custom jewelry orders
received by us. Seven top notch designers drawn from five nations
ensure that buyer requirements are well understood no matter which
part of the globe they come from. This wide expertise allows us to
produce high end jewelry of all types, modern, traditional, historic
and even antique. The gemstones used in our jewelry are not
leftovers, they are not drawn from a fixed inventory. We have
instead developed and built a close network with the world's largest
sources for gemstone mining and manufacturing. This gives us
priority access to over 200 million carats of gems. In the majority
of cases, fresh batches of gems are first made available to us. We
then pick the cream of the lot and the remaining gems are returned
to the gem manufacturer, that is the produce that then hits local
markets in various countries.
So why then have many people not heard of
Kaisilver. The reason is simple and straight forward. At Kaisilver
we do not believe in spending big bills on advertising and publicity
gimmicks. Though we do have fashion models and sportsmen in our
customer list, we do not use them as sponsors for our custom
jewelry. We realize that expensive showrooms and commission driven
sales staff all add up on the price tag. The final buyer needs to
bear all these overheads and this reduces the material value that
the buyer derives for the price paid. We have as a policy, kept away
from hiring sales staff. All customer service requirements are made
by experts in gems and jewelry. We use customer satisfaction levels
as a bench mark to measure staff capability and capacity. So it is
customer satisfaction that keeps us in business and ensures a high
growth rate.
How To
Order?
The process to order gems and custom
jewelry at Kaisilver is similar. We do not expect you to make a rush
purchase. We do wish that you take the time to discuss your
requirements with our experts. They will be in a position to
provide constructive suggestions that will guide you to make well
informed buying decisions. Email all your requirements to sales@kaisilver.com provide as
much inputs as possible to help us make relevant suggestions. For
example if you are keen on getting a green gemstone but, are not
particular about it being an emerald mention this in your email. Our
gem experts might suggest a green tourmaline or even a peridot
instead of an emerald. This suggestion would reduce our profit
margins but will give you a gem that, is much cheaper and even more
durable as compared to an emerald. When it comes to
payments we offer some very suitable
options. Paypal is the preferred form of payment,
it is fair to the buyer and seller. The buyer when using paypal
never needs to reveal credit card of bank information to the seller.
We also accept direct bank transfers but prefer to
do this on a case by case basis. When it comes to online
transactions these days, both buyer and seller are afraid of
frauds. It is quite possible that you do not feel comfortable
working with us at Kaisilver. We sometimes feel a little
uncomfortable with certain transactions too and prefer to keep away
from them. There have always been fears of processing payments
through Western Union money transfers. With the latest fraud
reports, fake sellers and even fake buyers have been pulling off
many online frauds using this mode of payment. At the same time we
do understand that armed forces from the U.S who are stationed in
various global positions sometimes have no other mode of payment
besides Western Union. We therefore accept this mode of payment but
at the same time, request you to avoid this mode if you do not feel
comfortable using it. Shipping is done through
FEDEX and you can expect a production lead time of around 4 to 5
weeks from the date of order confirmation and receipt of payment.
Every jewel is fully custom made and requires the complete attention
and concentration of highly skilled craftsmen. When it comes to
gems, we could provide faster lead times and this can be discussed
for each specific order.
