Black Gem Stones

About Black Gems, Black Gemstone Options

Black is an interesting color for a gem stone. While people who love black gems will like to have a gem with a black color in just about any jewel that they wear, others will not even consider the black stones for casual wear! It is also more common to see men wearing black gem stone rings as compared to that. This does not mean that gorgeous black gem jewelry for ladies is hard to find. Some classic antique style silver jewelry with black onyx can be found in parts of Asia.

The most common black gem that comes to mind is black onyx. This gem is not very expensive, can be found in fairly large sizes and looks great when polished. If you have ever read about the special powers of black onyx, you would know that many people believe that wearing a black onyx gem stone jewel helps a person get over grief and personal tragedy. It is not very clear whether the catholic black dress for mournign, death has anythng to do with this belief. Most of the black onyx that you see will be cut in a smooth cabachon cut. But fancy black onyx pendants and even rings can be found with faceted onyx gem stones. The southern part of Thailand is famous for it's inlay jewelry and black onyx gems are a favorite for rings, earrings and pendants. Large black onyx stones can also be found in some impressive bracelets.

Another black gem is black spinel, this is a hard and durable gem with a hardness of 7.5-8. Given the good hardness, it is quite common to find black spinel gems cut with a faceted style. Fancy beads and checkerboard gems are also cut in places like Jaipur (India). Spinel is normally mined in the same area where corundum is mined. It therefore is expected that Thailand and Burma which have corundum mines (ruby and sapphire) also produce spinel. If you wanted a black gem and were not particular about which gemstone it was, black spinel would be a better choice as compared to black onyx. This mainly from the point of view of durability.

Another black stone that comes to mind is black diamond. You will be surprised to know that natural black diamonds are expensive gems. If you see the black diamonds being sold today, you will notice that the price is very modest and these diamonds can be as large as 1 to 3 carats per piece. The point is that most of the black diamonds seen in the market today are treated for color. They are natural in the sense that there are diamonds from the mines, but they are of very low quality and clarity is almost nil. Such diamonds are treated to obtain a saturated black color, this substantially reduces the visibility through the diamond.

Black sapphire is another black color stone that is heard of quite often. If you view a black sapphire gemstone through a microsoft under sufficient light, you will notice that it is infact a very dark greyish blue and sometimes even a dark greenish blue. Some sapphire gems are very deep blue with a greyish tinge, they also lack clarity since they are full of inclusions. Look at such a sapphire with the naked eye and in normal light conditions, it appears almost black and gem traders refer to it as black sapphire. Another gem that will fall in the very durable category, sapphires have a hardness rating of 9 on the Mohs scale. This places them second to only diamonds on the hardness table.

Another gem that is found in a black color is tourmaline. The name given to black tourmaline gems is schrol. If you have heard that tourmaline is a strong and sturdy gem, you are right but this does not apply to black tourmaline gemstones. Schrol is very brittle and cutting or polishing this gem is not an easy task. Not many people use it in jewelry but, traditional beliefs attached to this black stone does give it a significant following.

You might also come across the name dyed black agate. This is infact agate which is dyed to a black color. Much of the demand for black stones is maintained by people who like black gems. Many of these people do not mind which black gemstone it is, so dyed black agate is getting to be quite common these days. Fancy cut dyed black agate beads can today be found in many bead factories in China, Thailand and India.

The above gems account for over 90% of the black gem stones used in the jewelry industry today. The color black is modest and classic, it has a reliable and confident appearance and this is the main feature that gives it a large male following. Another interesting observations is that most black gemstones are opaque, so you need not worry about inclusions within the gem.

Black gems that we discussed above are all modestly priced. However when you decide to get a black gem ring or any other jewel, make sure that the gem is not cut with a very high profile. Many jewelers tend to provide high cut gems in cases where the gemstone is not very expensive. You should however know that, a high cut gem would bulge out quite a bit from the surface of the jewel. When this happens the gemstone is more likely to hit against hard objects and get scartched or chipped. At the same time, we would not suggest cutting a very thin gem either. A thin gem will not have sufficient body mass and is more likely to break or crack with daily wear and tear.

Who Is Kaisilver?

With a spectacular online track record that extends over 8 years, Kaisilver is today widely accepted as the global leader in online custom jewelry. A team of over 3,500 skilled craftsmen and gemstone cutters works on all custom jewelry orders received by us. Seven top notch designers drawn from five nations ensure that buyer requirements are well understood no matter which part of the globe they come from. This wide expertise allows us to produce high end jewelry of all types, modern, traditional, historic and even antique. The gemstones used in our jewelry are not leftovers, they are not drawn from a fixed inventory. We have instead developed and built a close network with the world's largest sources for gemstone mining and manufacturing. This gives us priority access to over 200 million carats of gems. In the majority of cases, fresh batches of gems are first made available to us. We then pick the cream of the lot and the remaining gems are returned to the gem manufacturer, that is the produce that then hits local markets in various countries.

So why then have many people not heard of Kaisilver. The reason is simple and straight forward. At Kaisilver we do not believe in spending big bills on advertising and publicity gimmicks. Though we do have fashion models and sportsmen in our customer list, we do not use them as sponsors for our custom jewelry. We realize that expensive showrooms and commission driven sales staff all add up on the price tag. The final buyer needs to bear all these overheads and this reduces the material value that the buyer derives for the price paid. We have as a policy, kept away from hiring sales staff. All customer service requirements are made by experts in gems and jewelry. We use customer satisfaction levels as a bench mark to measure staff capability and capacity. So it is customer satisfaction that keeps us in business and ensures a high growth rate.

How To Order?

The process to order gems and custom jewelry at Kaisilver is similar. We do not expect you to make a rush purchase. We do wish that you take the time to discuss your requirements with our experts. They will be in a position to provide constructive suggestions that will guide you to make well informed buying decisions. Email all your requirements to sales@kaisilver.com provide as much inputs as possible to help us make relevant suggestions. For example if you are keen on getting a green gemstone but, are not particular about it being an emerald mention this in your email. Our gem experts might suggest a green tourmaline or even a peridot instead of an emerald. This suggestion would reduce our profit margins but will give you a gem that, is much cheaper and even more durable as compared to an emerald. When it comes to payments we offer some very suitable options. Paypal is the preferred form of payment, it is fair to the buyer and seller. The buyer when using paypal never needs to reveal credit card of bank information to the seller. We also accept direct bank transfers but prefer to do this on a case by case basis. When it comes to online transactions these days, both buyer and seller are afraid of frauds. It is quite possible that you do not feel comfortable working with us at Kaisilver. We sometimes feel a little uncomfortable with certain transactions too and prefer to keep away from them. There have always been fears of processing payments through Western Union money transfers. With the latest fraud reports, fake sellers and even fake buyers have been pulling off many online frauds using this mode of payment. At the same time we do understand that armed forces from the U.S who are stationed in various global positions sometimes have no other mode of payment besides Western Union. We therefore accept this mode of payment but at the same time, request you to avoid this mode if you do not feel comfortable using it. Shipping is done through FEDEX and you can expect a production lead time of around 4 to 5 weeks from the date of order confirmation and receipt of payment. Every jewel is fully custom made and requires the complete attention and concentration of highly skilled craftsmen. When it comes to gems, we could provide faster lead times and this can be discussed for each specific order.
