Big
Gem Stones
Page 1 2
A big gem is obviously a gem stone with a
large size and therefore a large carat weight. But when you refer to
large gems it relates to gems that have been cut and
polished, not to gems in their rough form. A large amethyst
rock that is mined could weight 10 kilos or more, in the
gemology trade this is not a big amethyst. When gem cutters start
cutting this big piece of rough, they will need to take off the
portions that are cracked, too included and even colorless zones.
This will normally result in many small rough gem pieces that need
to be further cut and polished. The 10 kilo amethyst rough would
yield about 2 kilos of good rough in smaller pieces. Each of those
small rough pieces needs to be further cut with preshapes and
facets. At this point of time, a huge cutting loss
will result and this could be as high as 80% to 90% of the rough
gemstone piece. The interesting thing is that the largest gem stone
that could be cut from this 10 kilo giant rough gemstone, might be
no more than a 10 carat piece which is basically 2 grams! So the
weight of good gem quality stones that come out of the 10 kilo
rough, would most likely be less than 500 grams or half a kilo! The
discussion on this page is relevant only to natural
gems, we do not talk about cheap factory made imitations.
So what is a gemstone
size that would entitle it to be classified as a big or
large gem stone? You could define a big gem based on it's cut
dimensions (generally in mm) or by it's
weight (carat which is 1/5 of a gram). Most gems
are sold by weight, so you would get a price per carat. Same quality
gems would generally have a higher price per carat as the gem size
increases. We just saw in the above paragraph that getting a big gem
(finished and cut) is rare even if, the original rough rock weighed
10 kilos or more. You will also need to consider the type of
gem when defining what would be big, medium or small size.
All gems are not priced the
same per carat. In general, gems with a higher price per
carat would have a smaller carat size even in the big gem category.
For example, a good quality blue topaz might sell for around 7 U.S$
to 10 U.S$ per carat. A blue topaz size of around 10 carats or more
would put it in the big gem stone category. If you had to compare
this with a good quality blue sapphire, the price per carat could be
as high as 1,000 U.S$ per carat. A large blue sapphire gem can
therefore be expected to have a weight of around 3 carats or more.
The jewelry design that
you use will need to consider the type of gemstone being set in it.
A 25 carat blue topaz pendant cannot be attempted with a natural
sapphire gem. Most gem experts would have never seen a good quality
25 carat blue, pink, green or orange sapphire. When you hear of
things like large pendant with 20 carats of natural good quality
pink sapphires, expect to find many small gems in
the design NOT one large pink sapphire weighing 20 carats. The stone
that best explains the relation between price and size is a diamond.
A good quality 2 carat diamond can be in the 10,000 U.S$ to 25,000
U.S$ range. This is the reason why most jewels use smaller diamonds
in the 1.5 to 2.5mm size range.
There is a very good reason why gem and
jewelry buyers in over 17 nations rely on Kaisilver for their
requirements. We are directly networked to leading gem miners
and gem manufacturers in all continents. This gives us preferential
access to well over 200 million carats of gems. We
do not limit ourselves and buyers to a standard inventory. Every gem
is procured directly from the source and custom cut according
to the order requirement. The Directstones
project is aimed at small gem buyers who are
normally neglected by the big gem manufacturers.
We welcome even single piece orders and do not
put restrictions on minimum order in terms of value of
quantity.

This big emerald has two great features. It is
large 9mm in size and is heart shaped. Heart
shaped emeralds are hard to find and big emeralds gems with
heart shape are even rarer. The big emerald gem stone shown
here has a weight of 3 carats, giving it a
weight that is proportional to the size. All emeralds have
visible inclusions and fissures, this gem does not have much
transparency. This comes as a blessing since the price is
just 1,450 U.S$ for this large emerald stone.
We can custom cut all emeralds to the shape and size that you
need. |

Not every 4 carat size
citrine would classify as a big gem stone but, this pulsating
gemstone is an exception. The trillion 9mm
citrine stone shown here has a multi faceted cushion cut on
the top. This cut shows good glitter and is popularly known as
the checkerboard cut. Get this big citrine

Who Is
Kaisilver?
Having established itself as the world's
leading online custom jewelry provider, Kaisilver now extends it's
merchandise line to include gems. While there is no shortage of gem
stones in the global market, reliable sources for the retail buyer
requirements are not many. Most retail gem dealers work with limited
inventories, this reduces buyer options. Another problem with these
small dealers is the lack of information and reliability when it
comes to gem authenticity and value for money. Kaisilver with it's
wide network of gemstone mining and manufacturing resources, is the
best source for gems of all types, shapes, sizes and cuts. With a
support team that is compromised of jewelry and gemstone experts,
the advice and suggestions made by the team relate to your
requirements and not to fixed sales targets. The website shows a
small sampling of the gems that we offer. You can infact request for
just about any gem on the globe. All gems are sourced directly from
the source, closely inspected and then custom cut by our expert
cutters. With a buyer base that includes fashion models, government
officials, casino and resort owners, lawyers, financial experts,
students and professors, doctors and surgeons, sportsmen and
newsreaders we have become the preferred choice for quality gems and
jewelry. By cutting out middlemen commissions and multiple agents,
we provide great value for your money. Our large online operation
does not stop us from welcoming even the smallest order. Gold and
silver jewelry is custom made with equal attention to quality,
material and craftsmanship. You can choose from our designs or send
us detailed for the style and design that you need.
How To
Order?
The process to order gems and custom
jewelry at Kaisilver is similar. We do not expect you to make a rush
purchase. We do wish that you take the time to discuss your
requirements with our experts. They will be in a position to
provide constructive suggestions that will guide you to make well
informed buying decisions. Email all your requirements to sales@kaisilver.com provide as
much inputs as possible to help us make relevant suggestions. For
example if you are keen on getting a green gemstone but, are not
particular about it being an emerald mention this in your email. Our
gem experts might suggest a green tourmaline or even a peridot
instead of an emerald. This suggestion would reduce our profit
margins but will give you a gem that, is much cheaper and even more
durable as compared to an emerald. When it comes to
payments we offer some very suitable
options. Paypal is the preferred form of payment,
it is fair to the buyer and seller. The buyer when using paypal
never needs to reveal credit card of bank information to the seller.
We also accept direct bank transfers but prefer to
do this on a case by case basis. When it comes to online
transactions these days, both buyer and seller are afraid of
frauds. It is quite possible that you do not feel comfortable
working with us at Kaisilver. We sometimes feel a little
uncomfortable with certain transactions too and prefer to keep away
from them. There have always been fears of processing payments
through Western Union money transfers. With the latest fraud
reports, fake sellers and even fake buyers have been pulling off
many online frauds using this mode of payment. At the same time we
do understand that armed forces from the U.S who are stationed in
various global positions sometimes have no other mode of payment
besides Western Union. We therefore accept this mode of payment but
at the same time, request you to avoid this mode if you do not feel
comfortable using it. Shipping is done through
FEDEX and you can expect a production lead time of around 4 to 5
weeks from the date of order confirmation and receipt of payment.
Every jewel is fully custom made and requires the complete attention
and concentration of highly skilled craftsmen. When it comes to
gems, we could provide faster lead times and this can be discussed
for each specific order.
Buyer

satisfaction since our very existence depends solely depends on
satisfied buyers. A high degree of repeat orders and a large

been at the heart of our success. Kaisilver buyers include people
from all professions and walks of life. Fashion models, sportsmen,
